Day by day, gently

  1. 1

Gather in northern Thailand. Golden Triangle viewpoint at sunset — three countries, one river, endless sky.

  2. 2

Cross into Laos at Huay Xai and board our privately chartered slow boat — daybeds, local lunch on board, the Mekong doing its thing. Overnight in Pakbeng.

  3. 3

More glorious nothing. Stop at the Pak Ou caves, where four thousand Buddha statues watch the river. Arrive Luang Prabang by golden hour.

  4. 4

Optional dawn almsgiving ceremony, then the Royal Palace Museum and Wat Xieng Thong. Afternoon free in Asia's most graceful town.

  5. 5

Morning at the impossibly turquoise Kuang Si falls (with time to swim), visit to the bear rescue sanctuary, lazy riverside lunch.

  6. 6

Weaving village of Ban Xang Khong, silversmiths, then a night-market food crawl guided by a Lao chef. Farewell dinner overlooking the Mekong.

  7. 7

Morning at leisure, transfers to Luang Prabang airport.
